New Zealand cyclist Paula Tesoriero has won the gold medal in the 500m time trial at the Beijing Paralympics, and she has broken the world record. Her time of 43.281s helped her to finish ahead of riders from Germany and Australia. She was overjoyed with the victory, and hopes to go on and win other medals. Her next race is on Wednesday.

I just felt pleased for her that all her work and effort had been recognised.

I am sure she's delighted with her achievement but isn't a lot of it to do with the technology being available to the athlete in the first place? I don't suppose the Africans will do as well at para-Olympics as they do at the able-bodies ones.
I have to admit that I have not been following the para-Olympics. I think it just doesn't resonate the way the real Olympics can - I don't suppose I'm alone. No-one has a childhood dream of racing in a wheelchair, and it seems odd to me for a nation to be cheering at having more disabled people on the rostrum than somewhere else.
